St Cuthbert’s Sixth Form Students Explore Tech and History in Berlin

A group of Year 13 students from St Cuthbert’s Catholic High School recently embarked on an exciting new educational trip to Berlin, from Sunday 2nd February to Wednesday 5th February 2025. The trip, led by Head of Computer Science and IT, Mr Bolam, and Teacher of Computer Science and IT, Miss Carter, provided a unique opportunity for students to experience the intersection of technology, history, and culture in one of Europe’s most innovative cities.

The group, made up of A Level Computer Science and CTEC IT students, explored a packed itinerary that brought their studies to life. A highlight of the trip was a guided visit to the BMW Motorcycle Plant, the only facility in the world producing BMW motorcycles. Here, students gained insight into the vital role IT plays in automated stock control and production processes, learning that without IT systems, manufacturing would come to a halt in just three days.

Students also visited the Computerspielemuseum, where they explored the evolution of video games, and the German Museum of Technology, which showcased historical innovations, including WW2-era fighter planes and vehicles. Alongside these academic visits, the group explored some of Berlin’s most iconic landmarks, including the Brandenburg Gate, Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie, and the Reichstag Building.

This trip offered invaluable exposure to industry applications of computing, as well as insights into cybersecurity, software development, and the role of automation in modern industry. Additionally, it provided students with the chance to develop independence, adaptability, and cultural awareness—key skills for future careers in tech.

This first-ever Berlin trip was a resounding success, and we look forward to offering more exciting opportunities in the future.
