'On the 25th of April I was invited to attend a musical evening. The music ranged from a Brass band to Brass quintet; to solo performances. The pupils involved were all GCSE / A level students. The solo performances included compositions by the pupils for their exams. What a delight it was to hear these works. They included piano, trumpet, clarinet, bass guitar and drums. I must admit I came away from that event in awe of these young lads who had demonstrated such brilliant skills in music. I am sure that in the not-too-distant future we will all be hearing works composed by them.
Before the event started, I was shown around the school. There were still students in the library at 5.30. One young lad playing chess on the computer, and no it was not just to fill in a few minutes, it was a competition. The joy on his face when the game was complete and he had won. It was good for the school he proclaimed. On the wall in the library was a prayer, I believe taken from a book by Pope Francis. It read: “In this Easter season, joyfully we sing, celebrating new life that Jesus did bring. In this year of commitment, as Easter joy beams, May we rise with Christ to ‘dream big dreams’. I believe some of the boys that I met that evening have ‘big dreams.’
