The Climate Challenge
by Mr Willis
On Wednesday 23rd October had the privilege of taking some of our Year 12 students to the Centre for Life for their annual sixth form event. This year it was a joint science & geography day called ‘The Climate Challenge’.
We heard a talk about the Wild Oyster project that is building up artificial oyster reefs off the coast of the UK. This is an important keystone species that filters the water & makes it possible for many other species to live in the area.
Later we used fuel cells to split up water into hydrogen and oxygen that could be used to power some model cars. We heard about plans to use renewable energies to create hydrogen & mix it with the natural gas used to supply homes.
In a session with Northern Grid we spent time investigating some of the issues with installing & maintaining wind turbines in the North-East. The students appreciated the complexity of delivering renewable energy reliably.
There was also an escape room where students solved a series of science & geography challenges in order to win a prize. It was great to see the students engaged & using the skills that they have been developing in their studies.
And finally, there was a careers fair where students had the opportunity to talk to various employers about STEM jobs. On the way-out students were able to visit the Science museum.
