Physics Olympiad
This half term our Year 11 triple science students were invited to take part in the intermediate Physics challenge as part of the Physics Olympiad. The challenge itself is described as for the very top students and is designed to test students on the ability to problem solve using physics well beyond the GCSE standard. Our pupils competed against schools across the country with 24 students entering the competition.
Congratulations to Alan Orujov receiving a Silver award and Daenial Flores, Rexell Pulido, Jack Tweddle and Tom Westgarth for receiving bronze awards and a massive well done to everyone who took part.
Kielder Observatory
This half term some of year 12 and 13 A level Physics students have had the opportunity to attend the Origins of the Universe event at Kielder Observatory. The evening involved a fascinating talk on the current perceptions of the universe and the important discoveries humans have made along the way. This gave our students an excellent understanding of the physical universe as a whole and what it means to exist within it. Our students had the opportunity to investigate some meteorites from space, the moon and mars while also standing on mars at one point. Students also got to use and were taught about the the large reflecting telescope in the Sir Patrick Moore Observatory where we managed to observe many constellations such as Orion and the Plough.
