Saluting Our Sisters

In Week 7, the school community gathered in assemblies to celebrate Black History Month with this year's theme, 'Saluting Our Sisters.' The series of assemblies on this topic were planned and led by our Head Boy, Frank and his Deputies, Alessio and Ryan. Frank, Alessio and Ryan focussed the assembly on two inspirational black women; Maya Angelou and Newcastle MP Chi Onwurah. Pupils watched and listened in awe at a live performance of Maya Angelou's famous poem 'Still I Rise and also watched a video in which Chi Onwurah spoke of Newcastle's links to Martin Luther King, Frederick Douglass and how there had been African soldiers posted on Hadrian's Wall! At the end of the assembly, Frank linked the assembly to our school value of 'Diversity' and invited pupils to attend Mr Willis' Inclusion and Diversity (ID) club on Monday lunchtimes in EN3.
