The Catholic Church teachers that democracy is more than a form of government. The basis for democracy is informed by the way in which we view the human person. Pope Francis teaches that
"The future of humanity does not lie solely in the hands of great leaders, the great powers and the elites. It is fundamentally in the hands of peoples and in their ability to organise."
Our newly elected School Council met for the first time on Tuesday 10th October. The twenty pupils, four from each year group, were elected following hustings in the Main Hall where before pupils in a year group could cast their vote, the candidates had to present a speech outlining why they should be elected. The School Council plays a crucial role in the embodiment of British Values, particularly that of Democracy.
All of the 70+ candidates who presented their speeches had already been voted to represent their form class as a form class representative. Form class representatives sit on their respective Year Councils. Form representatives were selected following an extended form time where pupils studied the roots of Democracy and its importance to British life.
The School Council give pupils a voice and have so far advocated successfully for a 4G football pitch and are currently planning a 'Culture Day' which will take place at the end of the academic year.
"the value of a democracy stands or falls with the values which it embodies and promotes"
(Evangelium Vitae, 70).
